If you\u2019ve been arrested for a crime, we can provide you with guidance and quality legal representation.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the crimes we can defend you against include:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc; padding-left: 10px; margin-left: 10px;\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#oui_owi_dui_dwi\">OUI<\/a>:<\/strong> Operating Under the Influence, a term used to indicate driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, usually alcohol.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#oui_owi_dui_dwi\">OWI<\/a>:<\/strong> Operating While Intoxicated, another term used to indicate driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance, used in certain states such as Michigan.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#assault\">Assault<\/a>:<\/strong> this is defined not only as an attempt to physically injure a person, but any action to threaten a person if carrying out the threat would cause the person being threatened to reasonably fear for their safety.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#domestic_violence\">Domestic Violence<\/a>:<\/strong> Assault directed at a person to whom one has a familial or living relationship with.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#domestic_violence\">Retail Fraud<\/a>:<\/strong> Unlawfully taking property from a store open to the public; shoplifting. If the property is taken from a home or a person, it\u2019s theft. If the person who steals from the retail establishment is an employee, it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#embezzlement\">embezzlement<\/a>. Depending on the value of the property stolen, retail fraud can either be a <a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#misdemeanor\">misdemeanor<\/a> or a <a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#felony\">felony<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Drug Possession:<\/strong> Knowingly being in possession of a controlled substance. Knowledge is important for possession of controlled substances to be illegal; if a person can prove that they did not know they were in possession of the substance, or did not know it was a controlled substance, they may not be charged, though this can be difficult to prove.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#misdemeanor\">Misdemeanors<\/a>:<\/strong> These are less serious crimes, such as petty theft or traffic violations, that are punishable by up to a year in prison.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/shawatlaw.com\/index.php\/glossary-of-terms\/#felony\">Felonies<\/a>:<\/strong> These are more serious crimes such as armed robbery, murder or arson, that can result in heavy fines and at least one year or more of imprisonment if convicted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Being charged with a crime is a difficult and frightening experience.
